We saw this dynamic play out, in a more modest form, when our sons attended Archbishop Hoban High School in Akron. Hoban is a football power. The program is underwritten by a couple of wealthy alumni, including the owner of a regional construction company that somehow always submits the winning bids for Akron's and ODOT's largest infrastructure projects. The son of the construction guy got a LOT more playing time than his talent warranted. Additionally, the son of the Akron Zips football coach somehow "earned" a starting spot as a WR despite an inability to catch the ball. Hoban's investment in football includes a truly state-of-the-art weight training and fitness facility that was positioned as an "educational asset." All students must take fitness classes and complete a certain number of weight training hours as part of their courses of study. A friend of ours was the school's admissions director for many years. She quit after repeatedly encountering new students (all football standouts) who were recruited and enrolled by the football coach without input from the admissions office. I suspect the construction firm was/is paying tuition for these kids. It's out of control.
